His comment about slow swimmers wasn't lost on her, but she knew he probably didn't fully understand the weight that a human, no, a mortal body put on you... the pressure to leave yourself behind in a child. She had felt it, and so she understood it. To him, it was probably math and science; numbers and letters on a page. Simple logic. But she'd been there. She knew... it was art and literature too... it was reason and consequence... it was everything you worked for... and yet nothing you achieved was satisfactory.
It all eroded away with the slightest breath of wind. As did the lives of children so easily extinguish...
“Cheers, then. Tell me what you want, Tamesis.” The edges of his mouth crept upwards and he transferred his empty glass into his other hand before he placed it on the table. “Because I just can’t put my finger on it.”
Her glass drained down her throat as his hard hearted response finally was voiced. So that was why he'd wanted the toast. He'd been trying to figure her out this whole time and had found her lacking some important piece of his little math problem.
...She was starting to like him a little less...
She waved her glass and it was mysteriously full again as she swigged some more of the liquid down, she regarded him with cool, contemplative eyes.
"Strange... refresh my memory, Jag... I don't happen to recall asking you for anything. Has the booze finally gone to my head? Or have I simply left my senses?"
Her dark gaze returned to his, no longer the sparkling lighthearted thing it had been.
"...Do not confuse me for the mortals you dally with daily... If I had wanted something you would know and I would make my business known clearly. I'm far superior to that sort of rabble. You know this. I've proven it already. You forget yourself in your stupor, I think. Too drunk to tell pleasantry from business... that's a dangerous state you're in..."
The dark goddess's glass was drained once more and she looked at him directly in the eye, almost nose to nose with him. "... Though... even though you suspect me of wanting something from you... I sense that deeper down... You want something from me... isn't that so? What is it, Jag, that makes your heart wonder? What question is it that you're not asking me? You're secretly hoping, aren't you, that I want something... so that you have the go ahead to ask? Hmhmhm... that's adorable. We're kindred spirits, Jag... both of us divine beings... No reason to hide anything here and now. It's about Aquavia, isn't it? Tell me, Jag... has it started draining you, yet?"
Her black mirth shown through slightly in her smile. He'd caused her to lose composure for a moment in offense. It was something he would find that wasn't wise to do often. It had been a while since she'd punished anyone for stepping on her toes... but there was only so much charity before one had enough.
"I understand well enough that pain... when two are in harmony, they share the burden... but if it's only one in strength and perfection... it becomes... difficult to balance the load. The little cow birds are all squawking in their nests for feeding... but there's only one parent to feed them... and he too is hungry sometimes."
Suddenly, oddly, she blinked and sighed, setting her glass down and letting her hair swirl around her in an odd wind before looking back up at him.
"... Truly I want nothing of yours, Jag. I sought to spend time in the company of one more like me than..." she made a gesture with her hand to the surface above. "...I have little love for humanity, I will admit that. But it is not because they lack potential. It is because they are numb, and worse yet, they are content. However... You have the capacity of enjoying the divine things... yet... you choose the mortal things..." She motioned over to his record player as an emphasis. "...I suppose... I do not really fit in with your... crowd. The other pillars of this strange world all seem to enjoy mortal acquaintances well enough... But I... I find it more enjoyable to spend time with one... who understands that it our differences from them that make us who and what we are... and it is not wrong to love those things."
She crossed her arms and leaned back, once again floating in the air. "...Do you understand the differences? Do you really know what it is like to experience love and sorrow, joy and pain as a God? Because... if you don't... it seems like a terrible waste of divinity... Because it's so much more intense... and yet... there is nothing that makes you feel freer... not drugs nor booze... when you're open to the full scope of what you are... it's incredible. I didn't know your brother... so I can't make any judgement or such on him or any speculations about his life. However... there was a connection the two of you had. I had it once as well with another... When it was severed... it felt like you were crippled, didn't it? ...But slowly you feel... like it's not gone. Like it were ... just unplugged. Like there's no power coming through."
The dark woman leaned back further, floating in the air, her eyes on the ceiling above them and beyond to some unseen focal point above.
"...Our lives were not created to feel empty, Jag. We are far better than that. I hope you all will come to understand that. There is beauty and power in what we are... and we are perfection. You choose to help humans... that doesn't mean you are a slave to their destiny..." Her eyes finally drifted back over to him to observe him.
