Well, this was definitely different. It wasn’t usual for Charlie to be this far away from Aster but after everything that had happened, he had to get away. Plus, the guards were on high alert because of the events in the Rose. Thieving had been hard to do in the city. A lot of the gang were having problems but at least they still could get enough food for everyone. But now he was out away from the city and into the forests looking for some kind of excitement. Maybe a small caravan come through that he could raid. Not always easy to do alone, or if they had guards, which it seemed most did these days.
So far, he’d seen three merchant carts go past, all with at least one Knight, and one large caravan. The caravan at least had given him something to do. They only had mercenaries as guards, not as well trained as Knights. He’d been able to get under one of the carts and saw a hole in the bottom to snag some bread. But that had been it. Nothing else had really gone on. And here he thought getting away from a war-preparing city would be more fun.
He was sitting up in a tree watching the road and munching on one of the pieces of bread he’d lifted when he spotted a small, red head moving through the underbrush, not on the road but close to it. He leaned forward a bit to get a better look and saw the red head belonged to a girl, not much older than the ones in the gang, and looking very disheveled. She did have a satchel with her. He smirked. He did have rules about stealing, never from someone younger and never from someone less well off than him. She was both of those, but, he wasn’t above pulling pranks, even out here.
He watched her walking slowly through the bushes. He grabbed a rope he’d tied to a tree limb above him and waited. She was almost within distance. One more step. Now! He jumped down holding onto the rope and swung down to her quickly grabbing the satchel as he passed before the rope swung him back up into the trees again. He landed on a branch and looked down at her. “Hey down there! Why don’t we play a game? If you can catch me, I’ll give you your bag back. Good luck!” He jumped between the branches holding her bag close smirking the entire time. Here was the excitement he’d been waiting for.
