THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS EARNED Aaron was more distracted than normal. His thoughts were always swirling about Shy. They still didn’t know a single thing about her, only some small hunches. The biggest hunch, and the only one that held water, was that she was from Domhan Tir. And it was lucky for her that Aaron had already planned on travelling there once he was finished in Hryst. Of course, the infernal weather had postponed his plans to leave but spring was now here and travel to the other countries would be much easier. He just needed to make sure they had enough supplies to make it there safely.
He walked around the market carrying a bag of supplies. He was avoiding anything electronic since he knew the people of Domhan Tir would not let him enter while holding onto his technologic items. He was just hopeful they’d allow him to keep some of his lesser tech. He kept walking looking at the stalls and thinking about what else would be useful for the trip to Domhan Tir and what might be useful once they arrived. He also wanted to see about getting things for Shy to try and protect herself if he wasn’t there to help her. He didn’t want something to happen to her. He’d grown fond her of since he found her.
He was still distracted as he started walking down the street. His mind wasn’t allowing him to think about where his feet were going. He didn’t even notice the small, pink haired beauty until he walked right into her and knocking her over. He stopped when he hit her and quickly went down to help her up. “I’m extremely sorry ma’am. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking.” He’d dropped his bag to help her stand back up. Once he got a better look at her, he remembered seeing her before. “Ms. Etro, I’m sorry I didn’t see you. Are you hurt?” He silently scolded himself for not paying attention to where he was walking. He needed to keep his head clear if he ever had to keep Shy safe on their journey.

Etro tilted her head to the sky, her arm coming to rest on her brow as the suns warmth embraced her. “Such a beautiful day…” Turning her head back to her task at hand she smiled at the lady behind the counter. Today Etro was at the markets, she was low on some food stocks and she had a day off so what better thing to do than come to the market where the food was fresh. “I’ll take that one thanks” She beamed at the woman as she put two grapefruits into Etro’s basket. “Thank you very much.” She gave a bow to the old woman who returned a slight nod and a welcoming smile, telling her to come back soon. Finding her feet she began to walk further on, looking for the next thing she needed, bread. Etro loved freshly baked bread so she always would follow her nose to find it. However since she had been here some time now, she knew that Everglen’s market stall was the best place to find the bread. As she walked closers the smell of freshly baked bread assaulted her nostrils and she even closed her eyes for the briefest of moments to take in the scent fully. Before she could even take another step however something, or rather someone had collided with her. She felt rather silly as he fell to the ground and watched her grapefruit roll out in front of her. Quickly she stretches as far as her body would take her and reached for it. Her slender fingers finally wrapping around the fruit, she then drew it towards her body with a smile. “Gotcha!” She said to herself not realising that the person who had hit her actually stayed around to help. It was then that she looked up to the voice that called her name. “Aaaroon…” She dragged out his name as she recalled it; she actually looked rather cute staring up at him with a grapefruit in her hand. “Aaron! Oh I’m sorry.” She started to get back up and he helped her to it. “I mustn’t have been looking where I was going?” Her eyes fell onto his, her wide orbs taking him in as her hair fell over her shoulder and she flicked a few strands behind her ear. |

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS EARNED Aaron heard her say his name slowly as if testing them against her tongue. Etro’s eyes were wide as she looked up at him holding the grapefruit close to her chest. Aaron smiled slightly at her. She looked incredibly adorable holding the small yellow citrus. “Don’t worry about me, I am fine. I knocked you over after all. Are you hurt?” She reminded him of a child almost in her innocence and purity. Maybe that was something more common in Hryst than Aquavia. Many children knew of things in Aquavia that would corrupt their innocence. But, here was this girl, the second one he’d come across, who was full of purity. It was something he wasn’t used to.
Being brought out of his own thoughts allowed him to focus on the outside world, to the smell of freshly baked breads just a few paces from where they were standing. This revelation also brought forth feelings of hunger he hadn’t noticed before. He glanced toward the stall before looking back at Etro. “I seem to recall plans to discuss Aquavia. If you would permit me, I would like to enjoy a quiet lunch with you. And I can answer any questions you might have about my home, if only you would lead the way to a place where we can eat. I owe you that much at least for running into you.”
He reached down to retrieve his bag he’d dropped. The bag rattled with the metal pieces inside as well as some of the other items he’d picked up. He smiled slightly at the girl and waited for her response.

Drawing her attention to her white dress with the yellow flowers on it, she began to dust it off. “I guess so, but I really should have watched where I was going too.” Placing the grapefruit in her basket she looked back at Aaron as he spoke of Aquavia. Her eyes widened with excitement as he explained that he would be happy to speak with her about it. It was also then that her tummy did a rather embarrassing grumble and Etro smiled to hide the blush. “Well it would seem that the offer of food and talk is something my tummy agrees with” bowing her head to stare at her tummy she gave it a rub. “Silly…” She said to herself “Alright, there is an open air bakery over there. It’s really nice and I was headed there myself.” Etro begun to walk towards the bakery, the smells of the fresh breads and pastries assaulting her nose and making her tummy grumble again “It smells so good.” She started to hum as they walked, eventually the bakery lady showed them to a table and there they sat. It was very cute how they set up tables outside the market stall. Of course this was a permanent setting as they backed here every market day but they still tried to stay true to it looking like a stall. Behind all this though was the chefs kitchen and as Etro tried watched him make fresh bread the bakery lady came to ask them what they wanted. “Can I get fresh bread with olives?” The lady nodded and Etro explained to Aaron. “It’s really nice, they grow their own and marinate them in olive oil with herbs, taste so good on bread.” The lady smiled at Etro. “You just did part of my job for me young miss. And will you be having the same sir?” MADE BY LILO OF GS |

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS EARNED He watched as Etro’s ocean blue eyes widened with his mentioning his home. He chuckled when he heard her stomach grumble. He smiled as she told him about the bakery a few paces away. The smell of fresh bread was everywhere. He followed after her smiling slightly and watching her walk. There was a graceful poise about her that he hadn’t noticed before. He followed her to a table and sat placing his bag next to him. Looking around, he took in the sights of the area. It still had the distinct look of a stall but with tables spread about for customer to enjoy themselves.
He looked back at Etro when she told him about the bread marinated in olive oil and herbs. He smiled more and looked at the waitress. “Yes I’ll have the same.” He looked back at Etro when the woman walked off to get their food. “It seems you come here often. You seem to know quite a bit about how they produce their goods.” He watched the girl’s face, smiling. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a glass tablet and placed it on the table. He touched its surface and holograms appeared a few inches above it. He ran his fingers through some of the apps before finding the one he wanted.
“So, you wanted to learn about Aquavia. I can definitely help with that.” He opened the app and it expanded to fill the space above their heads. It was a map of his home with several points for cities and towns. The hologram glowed light blue over the table. He opened his mouth to start speaking but the woman returned with their food. Aaron looked over at Etro before paying for their food. He let the scents fill his senses for a moment before taking a bite. “Mmm, you were right. The bread tastes delicious.” He smiled at her.

She liked his smile, he seemed like someone Etro could call a friend and this made her smile back at him as he agreed that he would have the same as her. Pushing a loose strand of hair from her face she began to explain that she did come here often. “Yes, I get all my bread from this bakery. I think it’s the best here.” Smiling she looked over to the chief that could be seen getting their food ready. “Maybe we could come back here again next time you’re here.” She eyed his bag; it looked like a traveller’s bag. She couldn’t help but feel a little sad that the friends she met always were travellers and never stayed in the one place. Pushing the thought aside Etro noticed that he pulled out something she had never seen before. Instinctively she wanted to touch it and actually held her hands to her chest so she didn’t. It was shiny and see-through and nothing like anything in Hryst. When he tapped it and images started to hover over the device Etro’s eyes widened “Oh!” She gasped as she watched the images flick over the device – this was all so new to her and she was so excited and a little weary at the same time. When he said he could help with that, it was to perfect a timing. He seemed to find the image he wanted and suddenly Etro found herself sitting in a city. “Oh my! How…” She was speechless, this was something she couldn’t quite comprehend but it was beautiful. Without even realising it she reached out to touch the images, they glowed and sparked but as she touched them, he fingers gingerly trying to feel for something, she was amazed again at how she felt nothing. “Is..is this where you live?” She was a little confused, did he live in this image or was it like a map. She was so captivated, the light of the hologram dancing on her features, that she didn’t even notice the lady come back with their food. It was placed in front of her with a smile, obviously this lady had seen something like this before because she wasn’t surprised like Etro. It wasn’t until Aaron spoke about the food did Etro pull her gaze from the hologram. “Oh!” The smell of it finally hitting her nose and her tummy grumbled, she actually blushed hoping he didn’t hear that. With both hands she reached for the bread and brought it to her mouth, taking a bite her smiled beamed back and him as she chewed, swallowed then begun her questions. “Yes it is very good…tell me. What is this?” She looked back to the city above her. |

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS EARNED Aaron watched her face as she looked around at the images floating around them. They reflected in her eyes which sparkled with amazement. He smiled watching her. She was mesmerized by the city until the mention of the food where she took a big bite out of it. He smiled more when she asked him what this was. “This is Shinsoo, the city that I am from, the capital of Aquavia. It lies a mile beneath the waves of the ocean. The city is split into districts of the type of business conducted. My home is in the third district, the engineering capital. The best engineers reside in my district and have helped expand the country out into the ocean. We all need to work together though to create a safe and environmentally friendly area for the people. My father is head of a large company currently working on a new dome for housing.”
As he talked, he swiped his hands through the images above them. He pulled back to show her the layout of the whole city. The giant central tower which supported the giant dome and the four corner towers at the corners to finish the support. The whole city seemed to glow with electricity and life. He zoomed into his district. Trucks drove over the streets carrying supplies all over for different projects around the city. People walked around greeting casually and working at shops and in offices. He zoomed back out then over to the unfinished dome. People worked diligently in large machines carrying pieces of the dome thicker than the buildings around where the two sat.
“Dome construction is a very dangerous business. And very expensive. It’s not something that is done every day. The materials cost a lot to produce and losing even one could jeopardize the entire project. In the past, there have been complete failures of machinery which resulted in destruction of the unfinished domes. We’ve come a long way since then. Accidents don’t happen as often now, and those that do aren’t as major.”
He looked over at the girl’s face. Her eyes sparkled and shined from the images and her own emotions. He smiled again watching her. Something like this was common in his home but in Hryst, this sort of thing must not happen very often for her to be so fascinated by it. He took another bite of his bread. He was glad his stomach hadn’t made much noise. He had noticed hers but he didn’t want to mention it and embarrass her. “Do you have any more questions Ms. Etro?”

“Shinsoo…” She let it roll off her tongue, her ever being hanging off his words as she listened and watched him move from place to place. Her blue eyes were wide as they reflected the water covering the city before the image zoomed into areas that he highlighted. She gasped in amazement, a smile across her lips. “You live there!?” She pointed at it, careful not to touch the image but as he moved his hands and it zoomed in closer to the city Etro actually stood up from her chair and clasped her hands over her mouth then relaxed and leaned on the table watching the people work through the streets he zoomed into. “People live inside of this image thing!?” She was so amazed, so curious and had very little understanding of what she was seeing.
When he zoomed back to the dome that was being built she really couldn’t believe her eyes and she had to sit back down as she stared at the construction taking place. “I’ve never seen anything like this….” She watched the construction workers, trying to follow their movements but she was getting distracted by other things she could see. Fish had swum into her view, at first she thought they were birds but then she realised they weren’t in the dome they were outside it. Then she watched as sea creatures swim, animals she hadn’t even seen or heard of before. “Your home look amazing” she said as her eyes came to rest on him and she smiled before bringing the bread to her mouth. “Maybe I will go there one day.” She mused to herself

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS EARNED Aaron watched her as she stood and stared around at the images. He liked the way her eyes sparkled from the sights. He smiled when she asked about him living there. “Yes, this is where I live. My home takes up an entire floor of one of the buildings I showed you.” When she asked about people living inside of the image, he had to laugh. “No, people don’t live inside the image. These are images from a camera which is attached to a building. These images were taken probably about three months ago.” He looked around at the images around them.
His eyes went back to her as she sat back down. His smile stayed on his face while he took another bite of bread. He knew that he’d enjoy showing Etro his home but he didn’t know that he would enjoy it this much. He was content to sit and talk all day. He enjoyed her company greatly. He got a drink from the waitress and continued to eat with her. His thoughts returned to home. He missed it. The lights, the people. Everything was at his fingertips there. In Hryst, much more effort was put for a simple task. He really did miss home.
He looked back up at Etro when she mentioned going there. “If you do go, you should attempt to seek me out. I would be more than happy to show you around the city. I enjoy your company Ms. Etro.” He took another bite of bread before looking up at the images again. “Would you like to see the inside of my home?”

She was trying to process what he was saying for a lot of his words were foreign to her. He spoke of cameras that made images like this one where people lived…well not lived but? She didn’t quite understand but at least she understood that they weren’t real people in there, some sort of image. She imaged what it would be like to live there and to walk the streets – the people alone looked so different to her and wore funny clothing too.
Taking some more bread and olives to her mouth she chewed in silence wondering what her sister would think if she left for this place. Then she wondered if she could even make it on her own, no, she would have to ask someone. Maybe this guy, Aaron would take her? It was then he talked about her doing just that, visiting. “I think…I would need someone to take me. I have never left Hryst before. Plus I kind of have an over protective sister who may not let me go.” She half chuckled to herself, it was sometimes rather annoying to feel so locked up like she did at times.
Etro didn’t really let him respond to her as he asked her about his home. She kind of blushed a little but nodded as she took another bite of her bread and then drank some water. “I would like to see it yes.” She tried to not sound creepy after she said it. Then suddenly she giggled as she couldn’t contain herself. “I sounded creepy didn’t I?” She smiled up at him through some loose strands of her hair.
